Where

FridayNightArt in the Rio Grande Valley

The Art

In the Rio Grande Valley grasslands, between the levee and the waters of the gulf, live mule deer, coyote, jack rabbit and the roadrunner. Hunger guides their lives. Only the children play. Tiny doe, baby rabbit, and birds watch the moving blades of the windmills and the blades shadow. They avoid the Goliath-like creatures and their spinning blades in fear of death. The wind turbines are sentinels and workhorses for the electric, not hunters of the creatures of the grasslands.

When we intruded into their habitat, moving through a pathway of caliche, road runners crossed out path and ran for cover. A jackrabbit dived for bushes where coyotes shadowed out movements. I'm sure they were thankful to flush the rabbit into their presence...breakfast.

We watched the sun rise as we traveled toward a windmill in the grassland. There I did three portrait studies of the windmill, grassland, sun and morning sky. All with eyes into the sun like Van Gough once dared. With the sunrise and the wind turbine in silhouette added drama to the magnificent mies of grass beneath the awesome blue skies above.
